Backworth 44

Today we look at the terminus of all the railways following the narrow corridor down to the Tyne - Whitehills, its staiths, and the Commissioners Quay.

We visit Coble Dene level crossing, where we see Backworth 44 at work.

Backworth 44 was built in 1954 by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn. She was delivered new to the Backworth System, leaving for overhaul at Ashington shops in December 1967, she returned under her own power over the BR tracks in August 1968. It was during this overhaul she was repainted in the new NCB Northumberland dark blue.

44 was preserved in 1976, but is yet to steam in preservation.
