Backworth 23

The Backworth railway wasn't one of the larger systems in the North East and as a result, it acquired an unusual range of locomotives.

The East Holywell coal co, only owned small shunting engines, as the loading of coal to the staiths was undertaken by the larger Backworth locos. Pictured here is the tiny Manning Wardle number 1, renumbered Backworth 23, when the companies merged in 1932. She was works number 1999 of 1921.
