Middle Engine Lane is an unusual name for a road. It is named after the Middle Engine, which was a stationary steam engine used to pull wagons up the hill from the staiths at Percy Main on the Seaton Burn Waggonway.
Here we see photos of the engine and the surrounding enginemen's cottages. A model of the engine was made by its last driver. This is on show in the museum.
The Seaton Burn waggonway opened in 1826 by the Grand Allies to serve Burradon and Camperdown collieries. In 1867 it was connected to the famous Killingworth Colliery before it closed in around 1920.
