401 Update

Photos from 401s NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) exam today followed by two volunteers, Michael and Steve, re-lagging and cladding the boiler

The before shot...taken around 2:00pm shortly after the NDT exam had been completed

...and the after shot, taken around 11:30pm after the boiler had been re-lagged and cladded. The work took a bit longer than we had hoped and we didn't get as much done today as we would have liked but no matter, the crane is booked for Thursday for the tank to be lifted back on. After that we can re-fit the cab, chimney and boiler fittings and hopefully have 401 steaming again within the next week

Before the re-lagging began, the NDT inspector on the left going over rivet heads with an ultrasonic testing probe. 10% of rivets must be exposed and tested on each section of the boiler, i.e each lap joint, side sheet etc

To aid the inspector, Michael slightly files the top of some of the rivet heads flat for the probe to have a better fit
