Motion stripping begins on Ashington No.5

Following on from yesterdays post, work has started on stripping the motion from Ashington No.5 for a much needed mechanical overhaul, the motion will not be touched until the axleboxes have been restored but the first few images below show the wear that has taken place over the years

LHS connecting rod removed

Big end brass split bearing

Showing the wear marks on the inside

And the gaps, proving new bushes are required

Additionally the dome cover plate has been removed

Connecting rod removed over on the RHS

Washing the split bearings in the parts washer

Cap removal on the leading side/coupling rod

Richard and Michael removing the RHS side rods

Once free of the crank pins the knuckle joint can be split, separating the two rods

Both connecting rods and the RHS side rods removed so far
