Ashington No.5 Update, stripping begins

With only a few small jobs left to do on 401 the loco is otherwise fully back in service, therefore our main attention has now turned to Ashington No.5. The loco will be receiving a heavy amount of work to it's motion over the next few months as well as the water tank, cladding & lagging being removed to allow the boiler to undergo an NDT exam, which isn't due until next year but seen as the loco is out of traffic anyway, it is a good opportunity to get it done

Shown in the above photos is the loco's backhead after the removal of the gauge frames and manifold, the manifold was split where it sits to make it lighter and easier to remove

Out on the running boards the clacks and injectors have been removed, and shown above on the LHS the mechanical lubricator (feeds the axleboxes) has also been removed for inspection

Some of the various bits that have come off so far...the dome cover, safety valves and whistle have also been removed (but not shown in this photo). More progress on ACC5 to follow soon
