401 update

After having some crown stays caulked 401s boiler underwent a hydraulic test in the presence of the insurance inspector on Friday, which it passed. Work can now commence on rebuilding and preparing for the tank and cab to go back on. There is still some work to do on the boiler crinoline before the lagging can go on, this should be done in the next week, among some other little jobs as well

In this photo, Tom (up top) is removing the manifolds blanking plate before moving onto the safety valve bases which have been removed, inspected/cleaned and re-fitted with new gaskets

Over on the cosmetic side...401s 'lemon' lubricator is in its final stages of completion

401 progress - caulking and more painting

Michael undercoating 401s lubricator

As stated in a post last month part of the reason for removing 401s cab and tank was to carry out repairs to broken boiler crinoline, the other reason was to investigate a potential leak.
This turned out to be several firebox crown stays which had been leaking. Today, boilersmith Adam from Northern Steam Engineering Ltd carried out caulking work

Adam caulking a crown stay on the LHS, video below

After caulking the crown stays and a couple inside the firebox the boiler was hydraulic tested up to 180psi, all dry
New boiler lagging (insulation) also arrived this afternoon

Finishing off the day with applying a second coat of undercoat to the lubricator and its brackets
