Replacing Nuts and Bolts on NCB No.69

The long and arduous process of replacing worn or damaged bolts and nuts has begun. Over the past week, Cameron has been trying his hand at the Colchester lathe turning a long piece of hex bar stock material to make five 1" Whitworth bolts. These will replace the ones which once held the buffer housings to the front buffer beam. More of the equipment in the workshop will feature with more components of NCB No.69 needing to be fabricated.

The first facing cut of the fresh stock placed in the three-jaw chuck.

One of the several cuts made to get the major diameter to 1".

A quick measure check show right on the money with a shaft length of 4 3/16".

Careful check with the material to get the cutting tool square.

Scratch pass completed to a depth of 1 5/16'.

A check with the thread gauge shows correct thread pitch of 8 TPI is being achieved.

A check showing correct depth of thread cut has been achieved.

Beginning to run the die over the threads.

Then with an existing nut to see how threading feels.

The finished article, ready to be cut in the donkey saw.
