Cleaning Tasks on No.69

Yesterday, Aadil, Chad and Robert were busy completing some cleaning tasks in the restoration of NCB No.69. Aadil, over the past few weeks, has been cleaning and polishing various brass and copper items of the locomotive - injector eater and steam feed pipes, and the injector overflow pipes (to name only a few) - with assistance from Robert. In addition, Chad and Robert have cleaned the rust and scale from inside the steam brake cylinder and have removed a large portion of the scale on the brake piston rod.

Aadil wiping off a thin layer of paint stripper with a rag before starting the polishing process.

With the use of 600 grit emery cloth, Aadil starts to remove the small dents in the pipe.

After some toil and patience, the surface of the pipe is looking polished and a lot shinier.

Chad (L) and Robert (R) begin cleaning the inside of the steam brake cylinder bore.

Robert reaching to get the rust which was stuck to the back of the cylinder.

An after picture showing how much of the loose rust was removed from cleaning. Next step is to hone the bore before fitting back together.
