Stories of Percy Main Railwaymen Part 4

W. Wilkinson

Wilfred Wilkinson was born in around 1885. Not much more is known about Wilfred’s early life. Wilfred married Hannah Jane Wilkinson in the September quarter of 1909. Together they had at least one child, Roland, in 1911.
In around 1908, Wilkinson joined the North Eastern Railway and at the time of his enlistment was a Gangman at Percy Main. It is also noted that he spent time at Barnard Castle, also as a Gangman.

In 1914, Wilkinson joined the North Eastern Railway’s Pals Battalion, the 17th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He took the rank of Private and the service number 17/886. HE embarked to France with the 17th Battalion’s “A” Company. He had been wounded whilst serving with the 17th Battalion.

At some point in early 1916, Wilkinson transferred to the 11th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. By this point, Wilkinson had been promoted to a Lance Corporal. On the 18th December 1916, Wilkinson died of wounds he received in action. He is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery and lies in plot X, row c, grave 33.

Wilkinson was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
