Washout on A5

The reason boiler washouts are carried out.....over time a lot of slime and scale builds up in the boiler, this needs to be removed so it does not cause any damage to the locomotives boiler and aids steaming
Tom removing a Mud-Hole Door from A5's foundation ring

Washout plug before being cleaned up

Only 11 more to go! These washout plugs were from the back head and foundation ring. With an additional four from the smokebox and another four on top of the firebox yet to be removed

Being cleaned up on the bench grinder

After cleaning

Tom inside the smokebox with the pressure washer hose, this water jet pushes any scale at the front of the boiler right to the back and down to the foundation ring where it can be raked out

RHS Foundation ring proving to be quite dirty! By the end of the washout, this water runs clear showing that the washout has been successful
