Aaran, Ben and Cameron have begun the arduous task of needle gunning the Driver's side of No.69's tank to remove the existing (and potentially some original) paint. Additionally, the removal of paint allowed for Michael and Cameron to inspect the condition of the outside and underneath to gauge the thickness of the metal, with some places wearing thin due to heavy rust.
Tarpaulins removed.
The underside of the tank was painted prior to arrival in North Tyneside.
Aaran needle gunning...
Ben needle gunning.
Cameron needle gunning.
Thickness of the outside ranges around 5.5mm, with the surface looking in good condition to be wire wheeled after needle gunning.
Readings of approximately 6mm at the underside of the tank show minimal wear. Although heavily rusted areas show thinning.
A sacrificial layer of red oxide was applied to protect the tank for when it will be shot blasted once all existing paint is removed.
