Work has restarted on the restoration of NCB No.69 this week, with volunteers continuing the cleaning up of various components. Here, Aadil is stripping paint from the chimney cowl...
69 received a full overhaul at Hunslet's works in 1963, at which time it was fitted with the Hunslet Patent Underfeed Stoker, allowing it to burn a lower grade of coal. This fibreglass chimney cowl was subsequently fitted to indicate this and remained on the loco even after the underfeed stoker system was removed.
End result. The next steps are to assess the damage to the chimney cowl and repair with fibreglass patchwork before sanding and painting.
The backhead boiler cladding plates have also been primed.
