History of Ashington No.5

Today we focus on Ashington No.5

Whilst the final Ashington Coal Company number 5 is nearing the end of its latest overhaul, Peckett No.1970 of 1939 is only the latest loco to carry the title.
It was proceeded by Black Hawthorn 181 of 1881, bought from the NER in 1892 before being scrapped in 1913. She was replaced by another locomotive built by the NER at their Gateshead works in 1885.

She was scrapped in 1939, just months before the next Ashington No.5 was delivered!
