A look around the coast

A visit around the coast today, in the period between the scrapping of the North Tyneside Electrics (June 1967) and the conversion to Metro (1980 - 1982). Between these times Diesel Multiple units were used, as seen here at North Shields, West Monkseaton & Whitley Bay. Notice the temporary stopping sign at West Monkseaton during the Metro conversion works!

401s new water tank

Ahead of our upcoming running season and Reunion Gala, it was decided to replace 401's water tank. To help create a more robust locomotive the decision was taken to have a new tank constructed, work has been taking place since early January with the fitting carried out yesterday. Huge thanks must go to Quay Fabrications - Lancaster Ltd for creating an exact replica of the original which will last for decades to come.

Backtrack Magazine

A brilliant article has just appeared in Backtrack magazine - the title "Strikes, Overcrowding, Fishwives and a Zeppelin: The first twenty years of the North Eastern Railway's Tyneside Electrics - Part One" tells you it's worth a read!

The article has been written by a friend of the association Rob’s Railway Ramblings

Brush-Bagnall diesel shunter

Over the coming weeks we will be looking more at our Bagnall 401, in the run up to its reunion with sister 403 (30th April - 2nd May).

Both locos were replaced at the Steel Company of Wales, by Brush-Bagnall diesel shunters. Here is a look at one of them...

Early days of the NTSRA

A brief look at the early days of the NTSRA, originally the association helped establish the now closed, Monkwearmouth station museum. Building a transport collection in the former goods shed - until this was condemned. We moved to our current location shortly afterward.
