Tyneside Electric accident at Manors

Another brief look at an accident on the Tyneside electrics. This time at Manors, on the 1st March 1913.

In this case, as the 9.58 am. up electric train from Monkseaton to Newcastle, consisting of four vehicles, was just starting from Manors East Station, it was run into from the rear by the 10.27 a.m. empty stock train from Heaton to York, consisting of an engine and eight vehicles.

The electric train was just on the move forward at the time of the collision, and the speed of the empty stock train is estimated at about 10 miles an hour. The damage done to the two rear vehicles of the electric train was considerable, but the two front vehicles were only slightly damaged; the four leading vehicles of the stock train were also slightly damaged.

The injuries to passengers in the electric train were considerable, 49 passengers having notified the Company of injuries sustained; it is not, however, anticipated that any of these will terminate fatally. The fireman of the empty stock train was also injured.

The cause was the signalman Fryer of Argyll Street Signal Box, returning the wrong signal to danger behind the electric.
