History Lesson - Class 08 No.08915

Today’s history lesson - Class 08, No.08915:

In 1952 British Rail introduced the Class 08, as the standard diesel electric shunting loco.

They were 0-6-0 locos with a 6 cylinder English electric engine. 996 were built making them the most numerous of all the British Rail classes. Our loco, No.08915 was built at Horwich, entering traffic on the 11th September 1962. She was initially allocated to Stockport Edgeley depot before moving to Longsight depot in 1965.

Here she also acquired the name Longsight along with nameplates, showing its long association with this depot. 08915 remained here under various owners until condemned by English, Welsh & Scottish railways (its private owner after British Rail was dissolved) in 2004.

Shortly afterwards it arrived at Middle Engine Lane in 2009 from the Colne Valley Railway, to assist with Santa Specials that year. The loco was purchased shortly after that and has since been in regular service on both shunting duties and passenger train operations. In 2017 the loco was returned to BR Blue.
