401 Boiler Washout

David removing one of the foundation ring mud-hole doors

Onto the large doors at the top side of the firebox

Plugs and mud-door removed from the smokebox

Steve sweeping out the firebox

Dave makes a start washing out with the pressure washer, starting at the smokebox end by blasting the top of the tubes and along the bottom of the barrel...

...then the firebox crown is washed so that any sludge and scale is collected in the foundation ring where it is chased round the ring and pulled out by hand until the water runs clear

Meanwhile Steve cleans up all the washout plugs

Inspecting the firebox and stays with the camera

A little while later the 'boxing up' process begins after all doors and plugs are cleaned and the boiler thoroughly washed through

David re-fitting one of the 14 mud-doors

Hose in and the boiler filling up

One of the other washout tasks, greasing round all rod bearings as well as the axleboxes once the loco was back over the pit
