Tynemouth Stations

Did you know that Tynemouth has had five passenger stations?

The first railway to reach the town was the Newcastle & Berwick which extended the line from North Shields, arriving in 1847.

The Blyth & Tyne arrived in 1861 with its terminus next to the Master Mariners Hostel, they then moved to a temporary terminus in 1863, before opening their new Tynemouth Station in 1865, over the road from the Newcastle & Berwick.

Finally, once both railways were absorbed by the NER, this allowed a new joint station to open in 1882. This remains in use today, with the Tyne & Wear Metro.

Headshunt clearing

Volunteers Rob & Jean have made a good start clearing out the vegetation from the north headshunt, this is to clear space for what will hopefully become our carriage shed. In this photo, Michael is cutting into one of the larger trees in the headshunt as Rob (R) pulls shrubbery away as it falls

Carriage bogie lift

Thanks to Websters today the carriage bogies have been lifted off their wheelsets and the axles loaded and ready for transporting tomorrow morning for tyre turning. Our resident Hunslet Austerity No.69's wheelsets have also been loaded and are going for tyre turning

 

North Tyneside Electrics
